Imagine the great minds of Mathematics parade in their period costumes, tell about their lives, answer Q&A pageant questions, and tell “hugot” lines.
It is possible and it was Rene Descartes, the French Mathematician behind the Cartesian coordinate system, who bagged the top prize in the Mathematicians look-alike and think-alike competition sponsored held today, 6 November 2018, at the Seminar Hall of the Ateneo de Naga Junior High School.
The competition which was revived this academic year by the Math Department, is the sequel to the first one staged a couple of years ago.
Ms. Rowena Galicia, Chairperson of the Math Department, said that, “the competition aims to break the common notion about Math as a threatening and boring subject.” She added, “We want Math to be significant and closer to the reality of the students. In fact, we want to bring back to life and show them the minds behind their academic suffering.”
With the Seminar Hall fully packed with supporters from various learning groups of all the grade levels, audience were amused by the twist introduced in the competition where the Mathematicians introduced themselves through Math-related popular “hugot lines”. One contestant, after mentioning the name of the Mathematician, said, “Ang Math problem parang crush mo yan. Kapag di mo makuha-kuha, titigan mon a lang.”
Another twist introduced was the Q&A portion where the contestants were spontaneously asked about common, familiar and practical things on the significance of Math in the classroom, daily life and the world affairs today.
At the end of the day, the competition was a sigh of relief from the generic notion of difficulty in Mathematics as a subject in the basic education. (News and Photos by M. Tatel)
